Nightstands - in African Mahogany

You may recognize these nightstands from a previous entry... well, they were indeed popular, and I was asked to make yet another batch, this time in beautiful African Mahogany.

The design originated from Pottery Barn, with some modifications on my part, which I call the "Bourne Edition" inspired by the movie series The Bourne Identity. Each nightstand features a false bottom that can be slid back to reveal hidden items, such as passports, important information, documents, money, whatever you don't want to be found by the casual intruder.

The construction is solid African Mahogany, which has a deep red-brown tone, which, when finished with oil, polyurethane and a light coat of wax, shimmers ever so slightly in the light, revealing various dark tones of golden red and brown. Drawer pulls are hammered bronze, offering up a moderately rustic feel to the piece.

They are constructed entirely with mortise & tenon joinery, which is the strongest joint one can use when making furniture - each piece is cut so that it actually fits into the next (each piece becomes its own square peg, which is mated into a perfectly sized square hole). Drawers are installed with 100 pound ball-bearing rollers.

Species Featured: African Mahogany
Lumber: All dimensional African Mahogany
Finish: Boiled Linseed Oil, Polyurethane, Furniture Wax
Features: Hidden compartment, tapered legs, mortise & tenon joinery
Measurements: Approx. 30" tall, 22" wide, 20" deep
